Thank you for the offers of transport to the HRSSA Zone Cross Country on Tuesday 22 May (P/P: Thursday 24 May). 

The event is to be held in the afternoon so the boys will be leaving school at 11.45am.  Each boy comes to school dressed in their school PE/sports shirt, black PE shorts, sports socks, sports shoes and school tracksuit.  Therefore, no school uniform is required.  The boys will be provided with a school race singlet.  Also, they will need a packed lunch and a drink bottle.  Please ensure your son has any medication with him as well.

Most of the boys will be returning to school after the event so they can attend school practices.  There are spare seats in the school van if any parents prefer not to drive out to Wellesley after the event. 

The organisers have lengthened the course to three kilometres to be in line with the Regional Course distance.  The start times are as follows:

• Year 7 Girls – 1.00pm
• Year 7 Boys – 1.15pm
• Year 8 Girls – 1.30pm
• Year 8 Boys – 1.45pm

The Football Tournament transport details for Thursday 17 May are on the back.  We had a large number of transport offers so most boys are going straight to the Sladden Park.   If your son is being transported by someone else please make contact with that person before Tuesday to organise a pick-up time and place.  The school directory will help with this.  I encourage these parents to try and drop boys at a convenient place for the driver.

Sladden Park directions: Off Petone Esplanade into Cuba Street, right into South Street, left into William Street (briefly), right into Bracken Street, follow the road to the left of Memorial Park and Sladden Park is over the stop bank.

Philippa Chandler, James Hutton, Ivan Woolloff and Angela Reiher are managing the four teams but the other parents are welcome to assist these people.  Tony Orbell will have overall responsibility for the Wellesley group and he will give the coaches the team information and draws on the day.

Wellesley is hosting Lindisfarne College on Wednesday 16 May (next week).  The three first teams will be playing with afternoon tea to follow the games.  We are not required to billet Lindisfarne because they are staying with another school while in Wellington.

The Wellesley boys come to school in uniform and attend the majority of the morning classes.  The coaches will outline to their teams what’s involved in regard to gear, changing and meeting times.  Basically, the boys will be given a gear bag with the relevant school playing gear.  They will get back into uniform for the afternoon tea after the games. 

Both Wellesley and Lindisfarne hockey teams will require rides back to Wellesley after their game.  Parents are welcome to join the staff and boys for afternoon tea in the Old Library.  Please return the slip below indicating if you can help with hockey transport and/or are intending to attend the afternoon tea.

Four teams of Year 5/6 football players are playing in a six-a-side tournament on Tuesday 15 May.  The tournament takes place at Sladden Park in Petone. 

Please fill in the slip below and return it by Wednesday 9 May so I can organise the transport details.  It is hoped the majority of the boys will be able to go straight to Sladden Park rather than coming to school first.   I will need managers to supervise each of the four teams which is not a difficult task.  Tony Orbell (teacher) will be at the tournament and he will have overall control of the Wellesley teams.

Your son has been selected to represent our school at the Hutt Region Sports Association (HRSSA) Cross Country Championships.  The teams will be doing a few training runs at school but I recommend they do their own training at home.  This is not a compulsory activity so feel free to discuss whether your son wants to take part and indicate your decision below.

HIBS is organising this event on Tuesday 22 May at Trentham Memorial Park in Upper Hutt.  The course for all races is stated as approximately two kilometres.  The start times are as follows:

• Year 8 Girls – 1.30pm
• Year 8 Boys – 1.45pm

The Regional Cross Country is to be held on Tuesday 26 June (P/P: Thursday 28 June) at a course to be decided.  Any boy who finishes in the top ten places at the Zone event will be selected in the HRSSA team for the regional event.  The top ten finishers at the regional event will represent Wellington at an Inter-provincial event.

TOURNAMENT SATURDAY 12 MAY

What is it?

Fast and furious, lung blasting team battle attacks of winning by using a small wooden stick to cleverly push or a flick a small puck (like ice hockey puck) to score goals along the bottom of the pool whilst holding your breath for short spells! You wear a cap, mask, snorkel, fins, and glove supplied byWellesleyor you can bring your own snorkel and mask. Yes your opponents sometimes aggressively bump into you-well notWellesleyspeedster demons!

What’s so great about this sport?

• playing on a Saturday night (only 7 in 2008) means you can still play other weekend sports!
• fun relaxed and social action and eating time with your school mates and yes you play boys, girls and mixed teams from primary schools!
• awesome efficient breathing and fitness training for sport and asthmatics!!
• Cool and so skilled coaches (students and champion players) provided by tournament organizers for your team each Saturday night.
• game usually lasts 14 minutes, and like basketball you will be subbed for short energy bursts!
• You can decide to play 10 days before each tournament by letting Darren know in response to his emails sent out approx 2 weeks before each tournament. You do not have to play every tournament.
• Yes you can continue playing at college, such at Scots, HIBS, Well Coll and even for NZ!

Mini Underwater Hockey League Nights.

What:   Students play in approximately 5 games on each night against other schools. Two coaches are allocated to each team to train and organise play. Sarah Arnold (Cameron Manual-Arnold’s mum) has offered to manage the team this year so she might make contact asking for assistance.  Please help her as much as possible.  She may not be able to take the team every time.

When:  Saturdays – 4:30pm – 9.45 ish pm Saturday night tournaments on; 12 May, 28 July, June TBC, 18 August, 15 September, 27 October, 24 November

Where: Huia Pool,Lower Hutt. Meet at 4.30 on raised spectator seats poolside at 4.30.

Gear:    Supplied by Wellesley at the pool (fins, mask, snorkel, glove, stick) or byo. Also required:  School togs, 2-3 towels, high energy drink and snack food between games and vending machine change (the pool does not change money for machines) and cash to buy sausages –optional.

Training: Most mini league schools do not train as it is based on a “have-a-go” basis.  Wellesley does not train.

Cost:    $27 (approx) per night per player will be charged to your school account.  $5 cash on the night for pizza.

Parents: These tournament nights are aimed at “having a go”. Students do not have to participate in all of them as they can register separately for each tournament. These nights are suitable for absolute beginners and also those who have already tried underwater hockey before. You can drop off boys or stay and enjoy the excitement!

Please return the attached slip to the Darren’s pigeon hole ASAP (first come first in basis).  A team will be entered if we have enough players for a team.  Late entries may miss out on a position in the team. The competition is very popular so we may be balloted out of some tournaments.  If your son cannot return the form, please contact Darren Houston directly to secure his registration.

Our Winter Sports Programme is scheduled to start on Tuesday 24 April.  If the Cross Country is postponed to this day or the weather isn’t suitable then it will start on the following Tuesday.  The boys in Year 5 and 6 will be involved in rugby, football (soccer), hockey or middle school sport each Tuesday.

I will brief the boys at the start of next term but you may need to check they have the correct gear (named in a separate bag) before they leave for school on the first Tuesday.  The three squads require mufti practice gear and the middle school sport boys require Wellesley PE/Sports gear.

The following are more detailed gear lists:

• Rugby boys require: rugby jersey, underpants (not boxers), shorts, long socks, boots, mouth-guard and a towel (for a shower).
• Football boys require: boots or sports shoes, underpants (not boxers), shin pads, long sports socks, shorts, t-shirt and a towel (for a shower)
• Hockey boys require: sports shoes, underpants (not boxers), mouth-guard, shorts, t-shirt, shin pads and a hockey stick (optional because there are school sticks available)
• Middle Sports group require: Wellesley PE/sports gear, ankle socks and sports shoes.

We prefer the boys in teams to wear different gear for sport so parents don’t have to clean their PE gear mid-week.  I do have some old rugby jerseys for those rugby players who don’t own them.  Wellesley sports socks can be purchased from the uniform shop but any long sports socks are fine for Tuesday sport.  The school socks will be required for the tournaments so I recommend you purchase them early and your son uses them each week for school sport.

The rugby and football boys may be a bit apprehensive about showering.  When the boys are dirty they will be required to have a shower before getting back into uniform.  The boys are permitted to shower in their shorts which will make it a bit easier for them.  If the grounds are dry then they won’t be required to shower but they require their towels just in case. 

There are some inter-school fixtures which will involve some of the boys.  These boys do require Wellesley sports socks, black shorts and Wellesley PE/Sports shirts for hockey players.  The school provides rugby jerseys and football shirts for those boys.  A note will go home with the details closer to the time.  General Information is put on the ‘Sport Admin’ blog and Ultranet calendar.
