Sessions

Boys from Year 4 to 8 have two scheduled PE sessions each week, as well as a sports session.  The junior classes have sessions with their teachers plus six sessions with the PE teacher over a three week period each term. 

Venues

We use the school for the majority of PE and sports sessions.  Normally home rugby, football, tennis and some cricket and softball matches are played at Wellesley.  The 1st XI cricket games are played at a variety of venues.  Home 1st and 2nd XI hockey games are played at either Fraser Park or the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington but the Year 5/6 games are played on the school turf.  Year 3/4 Basketball is played at Randwick School and all other games are played at Walter Nash Stadium in Taita. 

The senior teams do travel outside the Wellington region on a regular basis. 

Sports:

Tennis

  • Teacher in charge: Darren Houston
  • Y4-6 Coaching – An outside coach (Mark Flannery) offers 6 sessions for beginning players during the first term.  Cost involved.  Information sent out in the first week and sessions start in the second.
  • Year 6 tennis takes place during Tuesday sport (2.00-3.00pm) and breaks.
  • Year 6 and Year 7/8 ladders operate in the first and fourth terms. 
  • Year 6 and Year 7/8 Championships (doubles and singles) run from mid term 3 through to mid term 4.
  • ‘A’ ladder tennis on Tuesday after school (3.00-4.10pm) and Thursday sport (2.00-3.00pm) is open to Year 7/8 boys in the top 20 on the ladder. Runs from week 2 in term 1 and re-starts at the beginning of term 4.  Boys require racquets and wear PE gear and school hats.
  • The Year 7/8 Tennis ladder helps with the selection of the two school VIII’s who inter-school fixtures.
  • The 6 courts are allocated to the Year 6-8 boys during breaks except for when the coach is taking his sessions.

Cricket

  • Teachers in charge: Ross Hampton (1st XI), Tim Parkes (2nd XI) and Steve Girvan (3rd XI depends on finding opposition and Y6 Colts).  Steve Girvan has overall responsibility for cricket.
  •  Year 6 Colts team trains during Tuesday Sport (2.00-3.00pm) in terms 1 and 4.  Fixtures are arranged for this team.  Trials start week 2 during sport.
  • Boys require their own whites, hats and blazers for matches and PE gear for training.  The 1st XI are awarded school baggie caps.
  • All teams play inter-school fixtures (number depends on opposition).
  • Year 5 cricketers are normally entered in a “Kiwi Cricket” 8-a-side Zone tournament in term 4.
  • Wellesley has outside nets, an artificial playing/pratice pitch and bowling machine.  There is playing gear availble for those who require it.

Softball

  • Teacher in charge: Jon Mackie
  • A Year 7/8 team play inter-school fixtures in terms 1 and 4.
  • Trainings and trials take place during sport (Thursday afternoons) and any other time the coach requires.
  • Practice and play in PE gear but shirts provided for matches. 
  • All playing gear provided by school eg gloves.

Rugby

  • Teachers in charge: Murray Blandford (1st XV), Steve Girvan (2nd XV & Y5/6 Colts) and Darren Houston (Y5/6 Colts)
  • Training for senior teams after school on Tuesdays (3.00-4.10pm) and Thursday sport (2.00-3.00pm) during terms 2 & 3.  Colts train during their sport on Tuesday (2.00-3.00pm).  Boys wear mufti rugby gear for training.
  • All rugby boys come prepared for showers after sport eg towel and clean underpants
  • Jerseys and shorts provided for Y7/8 teams and jerseys only for Colts team (wear black PE shorts).  All players are require to purchase Wellesley sports socks (1st XV have a different style).
  • Year 4/5/6 boys may be entered in Rippa and tackle (Y5/6 only) tournaments.

 Football

  • Teachers in charge: Ross Hampton (1st XI), Andrew Tait (2nd XI), Tony Orbell ( Colts 1st XI), GAP Tutor (1st XI/2nd XI/Colts) and Kate Sinclair (Colts)
  • Training for senior teams after school on Tuesdays (3.00-4.10pm) and Thursday sport (2.00-3.00pm) during terms 2 & 3.  Colts train during their sport on Tuesday (2.00-3.00pm).  Boys wear mufti football gear for training.
  • All football boys come prepared for showers after sport eg towel and clean underpants.  Year 7/8 boys are required to travel home in school tracksuit or uniform if travelling on public transport after Tuesday training.
  • Shirts and shorts provided for Y7/8 teams.  Colts team (wear black PE shorts and shirts).  1st XI and Colts are required to purchase Wellesley sports socks (1st XI have a different style). 2nd XI provided with school socks.  Shin pads required by all boys).
  • Year 5/6 boys may be entered in 6-a-side tournament.
  • 1st XI, 2nd XI and Colts ‘A’ play inter-school fixtures.  A 3rd XI is selected if opposition can be found.
  • Home field is Williams Park (beside Wellesley).

Hockey

  • Teachers in charge: Tim Parkes and Sarah Dahlberg (1st and 2nd XI), Chris Parker (Y5/6 Colts)
  • Training and Colts games on the turf at Wellesley
  • Training for senior teams after school on Tuesdays (3.00-4.10pm) and Thursday sport (2.00-3.00pm) during terms 2 & 3.  Colts train during their sport on Tuesday (2.00-3.00pm).  Boys wear mufti sports gear for training.
  • Year 7/8 boys are required to travel home in school tracksuit or uniform if travelling on public transport after Tuesday training.

Underwater Hockey

  • Teacher in charge: Darren Houston.  A parent co-ordinates the team on tournament nights.
  • Year 7/8 boys
  • Approx 6 or 7 tournaments over the year.  4.30-9.45pm at Huia Pool.
  • A note goes out and once 10 slips are returned a team is entered.
  • $20 per tournament plus $5 for group food eg pizza
  • School togs and towels. Gear provided.  Own flippers can be brought.

Waterpolo

  • Teachers in charge: Jon Mackie and Michelle Norton (Y7/8)
  • Two selected teams.
  • School togs and caps provided by school.
  • Winter terms at Naenae and/or Huia Pools
  • Morning training (before school) and afternoon/night games.
  • Cost involved.

Flippaball

  • Teacher contact: Darren Houston
  • Lead into Waterpolo
  • Parent required to manage/coach.
  • A team may be entered if a parent is available and there is enough interest from Year 5/6 boys.
  • Afternoon games
  • Cost involved

Basketball

  • Teachers in charge: Alison Garland (Y3/4), Christine Trummer (Y3/4), Steve Girvan (Y8), Kate Sinclair (Y7), Chevon O’Leary (Y5/6) and Sarah Dalberg (Y5/6).
  • Year 3/4 play at Ranwick School in terms 1 and 2.  Singlets provided.
  • The Year 5-8 teams are entered in the term 3 leagues at the Walter Nash Stadium in Taita.  Singlets provided but PE gear required.  Parents wishing to oach teams in the term 2 leagues need to contact Darren Houston.
  • Practices out at school during lunch times.

Table Tennis

  • Teachers in charge: Murray Blandford (Y7/8) and Darren Houston (Y6)
  • 3 tables for breaks, PE and Sport
  • Senior have priority on all days apart from Tuesdays (Y6 day)
  • Boys require their own bats and balls for breaks.  Gear provided for PE and sport.
  • Senior championships run early through to mid year.  Teams selected for Regional tournament later in the year.
  • Y6 team(s) selected for Zone tournment.

Swimming

  • Teacher in charge: Darren Houston.  Junior teachers take their classes with Darren’s support.
  • School pool and local beach (Y7/8) used for instructural lessons in the first 6 weeks (approx) of term 1
  • Year 4-8 boys require school togs and towels for PE sessions.  Goggles, caps and swim vests optional.  For Year 6-8 wharf jumping boys can wear mufti togs.
  • School Swimming Sports: Year 4/5 and juniors in the school pool. Y6 and Y7/8 are held at the Easbourne outdoor Pool.
  • Year 4-8 Zone swimmers are selected based on school results. There is a Y4-6  Inter-Zone team selected from the Zone results.

Touch

  • Teams entered if parents come forward willing to manage/coach and if there is enough interest from boys.  Hutt Park, Fraser Park and McAlister Park competitions.

Multi Sports

  • Teachers in charge: Jon Mackie and Michelle Norton
  • range of activities inside and outside of school for Year 7/8 boys not in the winter teams
  • Cost involved but subsidised by school
  • Thursday afternoons and other times fixtures are taking place.

Golf

  • Teacher in charge: Darren Houston
  • Included in junior and multi sport programmes.  Introduction level.

Triathlon

  • Teachers in charge: Darren Houston and Murray Blandford
  • Year 7/8 teams competition run in term 4 in Eastbourne.

Cross Country

  • Teacher in charge: Darren Houston
  • School event run at the end of term 1.  All boys start and finish on the school field. 
  • Year 4-6 Zone event (top 10 from each year) and inter-zone (top 10 from year at zone), Regional (top 10 at inter-zone) and Inter-provincial (top 10 Y5/6 from Regional) in term 2/3
  • Year 7/8 Zone events have one less zone event from above.
  • Run PE gear with singlets provided in Zone teams

Term 1 – Distances and times

  • Juniors (12.45pm)
  • Y4 – 1.8km (1.00pm)
  • Y5 – 2.2km (1.15pm)
  • Y6 – 2.4 (1.35pm)
  • Y7 – 2.85km (2.00pm)
  • Y8 – 2.85km (2.20pm)

Athletics

  • Teacher in charge: Darren Houston
  • Lessons, Standards and times are worked through PE/Sport sessions in the first part of term 4 in preparation for school sports later in that term.
  • Year 4-6 Zone, Inter-Zone and Regional events in term 4.  Team picked based on individual results from school sports and trials.
  • Year 7/8 Zone team may be entered in term 1 (depends on programme)
  • PE gear and school hats required.

PE Teachers

Darren Houston takes the Year 4 to 8 classes for two PE sessions each week.  He also takes the junior classes for a three week block each term (six sessions each).  Our GAP student assists the teachers in their PE programmes.

Houses

The boys are split into the following four Houses:

  • Marlborough (blue but white collar on PE shirt)
  • Selwyn (red)
  • Wellington (yellow)
  • Croydon (green)

The Houses are used in school sporting events eg Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country.  There is a Sports House Cup awarded to the winning house at the end of the year.

PE Clothing

Year 4 to 8 boys require the following school PE uniform:

  • PE shirt in house colour
  • Plain Black PE shorts (shorts with side pockets are available for tennis players)
  • PE bag
  • Black Togs with house colour (speedo or shorts) and towel.  Goggles and cap are optional.
  • sports socks (ankle or Wellesley winter sports socks)

Note: School tracksuit is compulsory for Year 7 and 8 boys

Winter Teams Clothing

Boys in winter teams (Year 5-8) can wear mufti sports gear for their Tuesday (Y5/6) or Thursday (Y7/8) sports session.  Normal PE gear is required for their PE sessions during this time.  The school tracksuit is compulsory for senior boys and worn with sports and PE gear.  The school provides all of the senior playing gear except socks (apart from 2nd XI football).  1st team players purchase different socks (blue with red tops) to the traditional Wellesley striped socks. The Year 5/6 teams play in their PE gear and Wellesley sports socks with the rugby players provided with a jersey.

Summer Teams Clothing

PE gear is required for for their Tuesday (Y5/6) or Thursday (Y7/8) sports sessions. 

The tennis players are provided with a playing shirt for inter-school fixtures.  They also wear their Wellesley cap and plain black shorts.  The school gear needs to returned on the Monday following a fixture.

Cricket boys wear plain whites with their school blazer.  They also require a Wellesley white brimmed hat or a 1st XI cap.

Other sporting events

The school PE gear is used for most other teams and events.  Basketball singlets are provided for Year 3 to 8 teams.
